Community Group Discussion Questions — “Fear Not” (2 Timothy 2:8–13)

Icebreaker

It’s football-and-fall season: what’s one small thing you’re enjoying right now (a game, a snack, a playlist, cooler evenings, etc.)?

Discussion (10 Questions)

  1. Risen First: In v.8 Paul says, “Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead.” Why does Paul highlight the resurrection (instead of just the cross) as the anchor for courage?
  2. History in His Hand: “Offspring of David” (v.8) points to fulfilled prophecy. How does God’s faithfulness to His promises steady us when the world feels out of control?
  3. Chains / No Chains: v.9—Paul is “bound with chains,” yet “the word of God is not bound.” What does that reveal about God’s mission when His messengers face opposition or limits?
  4. Endurance & Aim: v.10—Paul endures “everything” for the sake of others’ salvation “with eternal glory.” How does eternal glory reshape how we weigh risk and suffering (cf. Luke 12:4–5)?
  5. Trustworthy Saying (Comfort): vv.11–12a promise life and reigning with Christ. Which of these promises gives you the most courage today? Why?
  6. Trustworthy Saying (Warning): v.12b warns, “If we deny him, he also will deny us.” How do you distinguish between momentary weakness and a settled denial of Christ?
  7. Faithless / Faithful: v.13—“He remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself.” Faithful to what? How does this truth both comfort and sober us?
  8. Fear to Witness: Which truth from 2:8–13 most directly pushes back against your personal fears (reputation, safety, rejection)?
  9. Overcoming Evil with Good: Pastor Freddy T referenced Romans 12:17–21. How does Paul’s call to endure (2 Tim 2) connect with the call to overcome evil with good?
  10. Remembering Practically: If “what we behold, we become,” what practices will help you “remember Jesus Christ” this week amid media and cultural noise?

Prayer Prompts

  • Boldness & Witness: Pray that God would make us fearless witnesses for Jesus in our homes, workplaces, and city—anchored in the resurrection and eternal glory.
  • Peace & Transformation: Pray for God to replace hearts of fear, anger, or bitterness with His peace and love, empowering us to overcome evil with good.
  • Hope & Endurance: Thank God that His Word is not bound. Ask for strength to endure trials and courage to keep proclaiming Christ, trusting that eternal glory is secure in Him.
