Icebreaker

What’s a favorite saying or habit your mom had that still makes you smile—or shake your head—a little today?

Sermon Discussion Questions

  1. Read Exodus 20:12. What stands out to you about this command to honor your father and mother? Why do you think God included this in the Ten Commandments?
  2. Pastor Freddy T shared that “honor” means to give weight or value to someone. How does that definition shift the way you think about honoring your mom?
  3. The sermon mentioned three reasons why honoring parents is wise: spiritual reward, social stability, and practical wisdom. Which of these resonates most with you right now, and why?
  4. If you were raised by a godly mother, how has her example shaped your view of God and life? What’s one lesson she taught you that still impacts you today?
  5. If your experience with your mother was difficult or painful, how do you process the command to honor her in light of God’s love and the cross?
  6. How can we honor our moms in tangible ways—even if they’re far away, estranged, or no longer living?
  7. In what ways might our culture’s attitude toward authority (including in the home) affect society at large? Do you see evidence of this in your own circles?
  8. Pastor Freddy encouraged actions like hugging, spending time, and helping our moms. Which of these are easiest for you? Which ones feel more difficult, and why?
  9. For those who are moms or hope to be one day, how does this sermon challenge or encourage your own view of motherhood?
  10. Who is one person—maybe not even your mom—whom you can honor this week because they’ve played a motherly role in your life? How will you show it?

Prayer Prompts

  • Thank God for the women—mothers, mentors, spiritual mothers—who have helped shape your faith and character. Name them aloud.
  • Ask God for healing where there’s brokenness in your relationship with your mom (or as a mom), and for wisdom on how to honor her with grace and truth.
  • Pray for the moms in your community who are weary, isolated, or overwhelmed—that they would be refreshed by God’s presence and supported by His people.
