Useful to God

Community Group Questions — 2 Timothy 2:14–19

Icebreaker (1–2 min)

What’s a tool that drives you crazy when it doesn’t work (dull knife, dead pen, low-battery phone, etc.)? Why does that bug you so much?

Read Scripture

Read 2 Timothy 2:14–19 (ESV) aloud.

Discussion

  1. Big idea check: In your own words, what does it mean to be “useful to God” (v.14–19)? Where did this land for you today?
  2. Quarreling vs. healthy debate (v.14): What’s the difference between helpful theological discussion and the kind of word-quarreling Paul warns against? Share a time you’ve seen each.
  3. Impact on hearers (v.14): Paul says quarrels “ruin the hearers.” Why do bystanders often get harmed more than the arguers? How can we protect newer believers in our group from that?
  4. Four diagnostics for our conversations: Using today’s four filters (aim, fruit, spirit, subject matter), which one do you most need to grow in? What’s one practice you’ll try this week?
  5. “Rightly handling the word of truth” (v.15): What does it look like—in prep and in the moment—to handle Scripture rightly in a group setting? What habits help you do this well?
  6. Think empty / Read full / Pray hot: Which of these three steps comes most naturally to you, and which is hardest? What would it take to add the hardest one into your weekly rhythm?
  7. Words that spread (vv.16–18): Paul says irreverent talk leads to ungodliness and “spreads like gangrene.” What kinds of “empty talk” are most tempting in church life (or online)? How do we lovingly shut it down?
  8. Guarding the gospel essentials (vv.17–18; 1 Cor. 15): Why does error about the resurrection unravel the whole faith? What are a few non-negotiable gospel truths we must keep central?
  9. Departing from iniquity (v.19; Rom. 8:13): What’s one concrete “depart from ___” step the Spirit is highlighting for you? What help or accountability would make that step realistic this week?
  10. Slow to speak, quick to listen (James 1:19; Matt. 18:6): How could our group’s tone (listening, humility, gentleness) make us more “useful to God”? Name one practical “sentence starter” you’ll use to keep conversations edifying (e.g., “I might be wrong, but…,” “Help me understand…”).
