The Great Exchange | John 19:28-30

Ice Breaker

Think of a time when you made a really great trade or deal. It could be something fun from childhood—like swapping toys or snacks—or even a great deal you scored as an adult.

What did you trade, and why did it feel like such a win for you?

Scripture Reading

Read these passages and identify the seven things recorded that Jesus said from the cross:

Matthew 27:45-50

Luke 23:44-46

John 19:28-30

Discussion Questions

  • When you hear Jesus say, “It is finished,” do you truly live like the work is complete—or do you still try to earn God’s approval? Where does that show up in your life?
  • What are you currently carrying (guilt, shame, regret) that Jesus has already paid for on the cross—but you haven’t fully released to Him?
  • How does understanding that your sin was paid in full change the way you view your past mistakes?
  • In what ways are you still living under an “old covenant mindset”—trying to perform, prove, or earn—instead of resting in grace?
  • Jesus exchanged His life for yours. What is one area of your life that you are still holding back from Him?
  • If salvation is truly finished and secured, how should that impact your daily confidence, peace, and identity?
  • The cross shows that Jesus didn’t just teach truth—He lived it out completely. Where is God calling you to move from talking about faith to living it out?
  • Who in your life needs to hear about this “Great Exchange”? What is holding you back from sharing it?
  • Where have you been trying to “fix yourself” instead of trusting in the finished work of Jesus?
  • What would it practically look like this week for you to “meet Jesus at the cross” and walk in freedom instead of striving?

Prayer Prompts

  • Lord, I confess that I often try to carry what You already paid for. Today, I surrender my sin, my guilt, and my striving. Teach me to rest in Your finished work.
  • Jesus, help me to fully believe that my debt has been paid in full. Replace my shame with Your righteousness and my fear with Your peace.
  • Father, show me where I am still holding onto my old way of life. Give me the courage to walk in the new life You’ve given me through Christ.
  • Thank You, Jesus, for the cross. Thank You that You willingly gave Your life for mine. Help my life reflect gratitude for what You have done.
  • God, place someone on my heart who needs to hear about Your grace. Give me boldness and compassion to share the hope of the gospel this week.
