Serving like Jesus

Philippians 2:1-11

Icebreaker:

What talent or gift do you think God has given you?

Discussion Questions:

1. What does Paul mean by “encouragement in Christ” in verse 1? How can this encouragement manifest in our lives today?

1. In verse 2, Paul urges the Philippians to be of the same mind. What are practical ways we can foster unity within our friend groups, workplaces, or even our church?

1. How does the concept of humility, as presented in verses 3-4, challenge common cultural values today? What does true humility look like in action?  Think about the example that Pastor Freddy gave about people wanting to cite their rights….

1. Verse 5 encourages us to have the same mindset as Christ. In what ways can we imitate Christ’s mindset in our daily interactions with others?  Are we always putting ourselves first or considering the needs of others?

1. Discuss the significance of Jesus’ humility and obedience as described in verses 6-8. How does His example impact how we are to live our lives? Are our actions genuine?

1. What does it mean that God exalted Jesus and gave Him the name above every name (verses 9-11)? How does this elevate our understanding of His authority?

1. In what ways do verses 10-11 speak to the larger scope of God’s plan for humanity? How do they influence our understanding of worship?

1. Reflect on the phrase “every knee should bow.” What implications does this have for different worldviews and beliefs? How should Christians respond to this?  Does this give you assurance in the power of the true God?

1. How can personal and communal practices of humility and service affect our witness to those outside the faith? What are some practical ways we can serve, loving the community where we work, live, and raise our families?  
2. As you reflect on Philippians 2:1–11 as a whole, where is the Holy Spirit inviting you to lay something down this week—your preferences, your rights, your pride, or your comfort—in order to more fully reflect the humility of Christ?

Prayer Prompts

• Thank God for the humility, obedience, and love of Jesus, who willingly laid down His rights for our salvation.
• Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas of pride, self-interest, or entitlement that hinder unity and humility in your life.
• Pray for hearts that are quick to serve, slow to demand rights, and eager to consider others above ourselves.
• Lift up your church, workplaces, families, and friendships, asking God to form you into people of one mind and one spirit in Christ.
• Pray that your lives would be a visible witness to the power of the true God, causing others to see Jesus and respond in worship.
