Why Pray? | Matthew 6:5-7, Philippians 4:6-7, 1 Peter 5:6-7

Ice Breaker:

When something stressful or unexpected happens in your life, what is your first response?

  • Try to fix it immediately
  • Talk it out with someone
  • Distract yourself
  • Pray about it

Follow up:

  • Why do you think that’s your natural response?
  • Has that approach been effective for you?

Read these passages together:

Matthew 6:5-7, Philippians 4:6-7, 1 Peter 5:6-7

Discussion Questions

1. Jesus speaks about prayer as an expectation, not a suggestion. How does that challenge the way you currently view prayer?

2. If someone looked at your daily life, what evidence would they see that prayer is a priority for you?

3. What are the biggest obstacles that keep you from consistent prayer, and what practical step can you take to overcome one of them this week?

4. When you face anxiety or stress, what is your first instinct—prayer or control? Why?

5. Can you share a time when prayer brought you peace even though your situation didn’t immediately change?

6. What specific worry are you carrying right now that you need to intentionally bring before God in prayer?

7. How does a lack of prayer reveal areas of pride or self-reliance in your life?

8. What does it practically look like for you to “cast your cares” on God instead of trying to carry them yourself?

9. In what area of your life do you need to humble yourself and invite God’s grace instead of resisting Him?

10. If you were to take one meaningful step this week to grow in your prayer life, what would it be—and when will you do it?

Prayer Prompts

1. Lord, help me see prayer not as optional, but as essential. Give me the discipline and desire to meet with You daily.

2. Father, I bring my worries and anxieties to You. Teach me to release control and trust You with what I cannot fix.

3. God, reveal any pride or self-reliance in my heart. Help me to humble myself before You and depend on Your grace.

4. Jesus, fill my heart with Your peace that surpasses understanding, even in the middle of uncertain circumstances.

5. Holy Spirit, guide me into a consistent rhythm of prayer. Remind me to turn to You throughout my day, not just in moments of need.
