Community Group Questions — 2 Timothy 3:1–5
Icebreaker
Share a quick story about a time you learned to identify something hazardous in everyday life (poison ivy, food allergy, online scam, etc.). What helped you spot it sooner the next time?
Discussion Questions
- Have someone from your group read 2 Timothy 3:1–5 out loud. What does Paul mean by “the last days,” and what kind of difficulty does he focus on? How is that different from what we usually expect when we think of hard times?
- Walk through the list in verses 2–5. Which two or three traits feel most common in our culture right now, and why?
- Paul uses the phrase, “Having the appearance of godliness but denying its power.” What does the power of godliness refer to? How do we tell the difference between appearance and Spirit-produced change?
- Where is the line between healthy caution and cynical suspicion? What practices help you be discerning without becoming jaded?
- Paul says, “Avoid such people.” How can Christians obey that while still living on mission among unbelievers? Use the contrast from Pastor Freddy T’s sermon between friendship that shapes you and a focused mission posture like Jesus with tax collectors and sinners.
- Pastor Freddy T quoted Craig Groeschel: “Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future.” How have you seen the truth of that in your own life—positively or negatively?
- Parents and mentors often ask questions about their kids’ friends. What are wise, practical questions to ask that go beyond church attendance and look for real character?
- Verses 6–7 describe vulnerable targets and manipulative teachers. What makes someone especially susceptible to spiritual manipulation, and how can the church create safeguards and care for those who are burdened, lonely, or eager to learn?
- Verse 9 offers assurance that the folly of false teachers will be exposed. How does that promise steady us when we feel confused or pressured by persuasive voices?
- Honest self-check. Where do you see any of Paul’s list surfacing in your own life? What would repentance and new patterns look like this week? Be specific.
