Community Group Questions — 2 Timothy 4:9–22

Icebreaker

When in your life have you felt most supported by someone’s presence—even if they didn’t say much or “fix” anything?

Discussion Questions

  1. David Kissell emphasized the reality of struggles, noting that even faithful servants like Paul feel loneliness and physical need. Where do you currently feel the weight of loneliness, limitation, or struggle in your walk with Jesus?
  2. In verse 10 Paul says Demas “deserted” him because he loved the world. How do we guard our own hearts from slowly drifting toward the love of the world?
  3. Paul asked Timothy to come quickly, bring a cloak, books, and parchments. What do these small, personal requests show you about Paul’s humanity—and why is that encouraging? (Alex highlighted this as an important reminder that Paul was a real man with real needs.)
  4. Alex Morris talked about the Paul–Timothy relationship and the need for spiritual mentors. Who has been a “Paul” in your life, and who are the potential “Timothys” God might be calling you to invest in?
  5. Paul stood alone at his first defense, yet said, “But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me.” Where in your life are you most needing to rest in the Lord’s presence rather than the approval or support of people?
  6. Pastor Rob Simpson highlighted how isolation can tempt us to doubt, fear, or pull back. When have you felt spiritually isolated, and what helped (or would have helped) draw you back into Christian fellowship?
  7. Paul warns Timothy about Alexander the coppersmith. How do we discern when someone is simply difficult versus when someone is actively opposing the message of the gospel?
  8. Paul says the Lord will “bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom.” Where do you struggle with assurance, and how does Paul’s confidence in Christ encourage you to rest in the gospel?
  9. Paul gives a long list of names of some who deserted him, some who harmed him, some who blessed him. How does this passage help you hold realistic expectations about Christian friendship and community?
  10. All three sermons emphasized the need for fellowship, spiritual networks, and gospel partnerships. What is one way you can intentionally strengthen Christian relationships in your life this week?

Prayer Prompts

  • Thank God that even when human help disappears, the Lord stands by us and strengthens us.
  • Confess any areas where you’ve been seeking validation or identity from sources other than Christ.
  • Pray for courage to invest in spiritual relationships—both in finding your “Paul” and pursuing your “Timothys.”
  • Ask God to help your group resist isolation and pursue deep, meaningful fellowship like the early church.
  • Pray for assurance: that each person would rest confidently in what Christ has done, not in personal performance.
  • Lift up anyone in your group who feels lonely, abandoned, or opposed in this season.
